When You Cannot See the Way Ahead
Key Scripture: Psalm 139:12 (NIV)
“Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
The Light We Cannot See
Imagine walking through a dark forest where the path ahead is invisible. Fear rises with every step. Suddenly, you remember that a trusted guide is walking beside you. You may not see the road, but you know you are not alone.
Life sometimes feels like that. Unanswered prayers, unexpected losses, and uncertain futures can make us wonder where God is. Yet Scripture reveals a profound truth: darkness does not mean God is absent. He can be present even when His purposes remain hidden.
1. Moses — Drawing Near in the Darkness
“Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.” — Exodus 20:21 (NIV)
While the Israelites stood at a distance, Moses drew near to God. Faith does not require us to understand everything; it invites us to trust God even when circumstances frighten or confuse us.
Life application: Do not wait for your situation to improve before seeking God. Draw near to Him through prayer and His Word.
2. Solomon — Acknowledging God’s Majesty
“The LORD has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud.” — 1 Kings 8:12 (NIV)
At the dedication of the Temple, Solomon acknowledged the mystery of God’s presence. God’s wisdom and glory exceed human understanding. A delayed answer does not mean we have been forgotten.
Life application: Worship God for who He is, even when you cannot understand what He is doing.
3. David — Trusting God Through the Storm
“You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” — Psalm 18:28 (NIV)
David faced danger and uncertainty, yet he trusted God as his refuge and deliverer. Sometimes God changes our circumstances; at other times, He strengthens us to endure them.
Life application: Instead of asking only when the darkness will end, ask God to strengthen your faith while you wait.
Faith in Uncertain Seasons
Looking back over my journey, I recognise that faith often meant trusting God without knowing how everything would unfold. When I stepped out to establish a school for underprivileged children in rural Tamil Nadu, I had to depend on His guidance, prayer, and perseverance.Yet God’s Word remained my anchor, reminding me that although my circumstances had changed, His faithfulness had not.
I have learned that trusting God does not mean pretending pain is absent. It means bringing our tears and questions into His presence and continuing to walk with Him.
Darkness may change our circumstances, but it need not extinguish our faith.
5. Living by Faith When Answers Are Hidden
- Draw near
- Trust His character
- Take the next step
- Wait with hope
Reflection
Am I drawing nearer to God or withdrawing when life becomes difficult? What step of faith can I take today?
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I cannot understand Your ways or see the path ahead, help me trust Your presence. Give me strength to wait, courage to obey, and faith to rest in Your unfailing love. Let Your light guide me through every season of uncertainty. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Word of Encouragement
Dear fellow pilgrim, you may not understand the darkness surrounding you, but you can trust the God who sees you in it.
When darkness hides the way ahead, remember: nothing is hidden from God.
