Key Scripture: John 10:27 (NIV)
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
The Voice That Changes Our Direction
Have you ever been in a crowded place where several voices compete for your attention? Amid the noise, you may recognise the voice of someone you love. That familiar voice draws your attention because a relationship has made it meaningful to you.
Our spiritual journey is similar. Every day, we hear competing voices, fear, worldly opinions, personal desires, and the pressures of life. Yet Jesus invites us to recognise His voice, experience His personal love, and follow Him faithfully.
In John 10:27, Jesus gives us three essential marks of our relationship with Him: hearing His voice, being known by Him, and following Him.
1. My Sheep Listen to My Voice — Recognise His Voice
Jesus’ sheep learn to recognise their Shepherd. As believers, we grow in discernment through Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with God. His guidance will never contradict the truth of His Word.
Application: Make time to read the Bible prayerfully. Before responding to life’s challenges, pause and ask whether your thoughts and decisions align with God’s truth.
2. I Know Them — Rest in His Personal Care
Jesus knows us intimately. He understands our struggles, sees our tears, and remains present even when others fail to understand us.
We are not forgotten or overlooked. Our Shepherd knows our weaknesses and lovingly calls us to trust Him.
Application: When you feel lonely, anxious, or uncertain, remember that Jesus knows you completely. Bring your burdens to Him and rest in His faithful care.
3. They Follow Me — Walk in Obedience
Recognising Jesus’ voice must lead to action. Following Him means trusting His direction, obeying His Word, forgiving others, surrendering our plans, and choosing His ways over our own.We may not understand the entire journey, but we can obey Him in the next step.
Application: Ask yourself, “Lord, what would obedience to You look like in my life today?”
In my early twenties, I came to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. God used people, His Word, and the message of the gospel to help me understand who Jesus is. As I heard the truth, the Holy Spirit worked in my heart and led me to trust Christ.
Through Jesus, I experienced God’s forgiveness, peace, and the hope of new life. Over the years, as I continued to hear and study His Word, my faith grew. Looking back, I recognise that following Jesus is not merely about making a decision at one point in life; it is a daily journey of listening, trusting, surrendering, and obeying.
The Shepherd who called me to Himself continues to teach me to recognise His voice and follow His leading.
A Promise of Security
Jesus declares in John 10:28 that He gives His sheep eternal life and that no one can snatch them from His hand. What a wonderful assurance of His power and faithfulness! Let us respond to His grace by continuing in faith and walking closely with Him.
Reflection Questions
- Am I giving God’s Word enough space to shape my decisions?
- Do I rest in the assurance that Jesus knows and loves me?
- What is one area in which I need to follow Him more faithfully?
Encouragement: You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can trust the Shepherd who walks with you today. Listen to His voice, rest in His love, and follow His steps—one day at a time
