Restoring My Peace is Engaging Body, Mind, and Spirit-

“This devotional is a part of the Understanding Stress from Science and Scripture.”

While stress and anxiety can hijack our nervous system, God has designed rhythms and practices that restore peace and align body, mind, and spirit. Following Jesus’ example, we can intentionally engage our whole being, through prayer, meditation, worship, rest, gratitude, acts of kindness, and community, to experience holistic restoration.

Understanding Restoration:
Just as chronic stress activates the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), God’s restorative rhythms engage the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS), the “rest and restore” system. Activating the PNS slows heart rate, lowers cortisol, and stabilizes emotions. When our nervous system responds to God’s rhythms, peace becomes tangible and sustainable. Spiritual practices are not symbolic—they are God-designed tools for emotional, mental, and physical health.

Key Practices That Restore Peace:

  • Prayer: Surrendering our worries to God reduces cortisol and activates calm pathways.
  • Scripture Meditation: Reflecting on God’s Word rewires anxious thoughts, replacing fear with truth (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • Worship: Singing or listening to praise music strengthens emotional regulation and quiets the amygdala.
  • Gratitude & Acts of Kindness: Cultivate joy, stimulate dopamine and oxytocin, and foster social and spiritual connection.
  • Community: Fellowship reduces SNS overactivation and strengthens trust pathways.
  • Rest & Sabbath: Sleep, retreats, and Sabbath practices restore immunity, consolidate memory, and regulate emotions.
  • Boundaries: Saying “no” prevents overcommitment and protects energy.

Personal Reflection:
During my difficult challenges over the past few years, juggling travel, family responsibilities, and commitments left me exhausted and anxious. I noticed that intentional moments of prayer, Scripture meditation, and worship restored calm to my mind and body. Volunteering at church activities shifted my focus outward, transforming stress into purpose. Acts of gratitude and kindness, even small gestures, elevated my inner joy and deepened connection with God.

By pausing to intentionally engage body, mind, and spirit, I experienced God’s peace in tangible ways. Psalm 46:10 became my anchor: “Be still, and know that I am God.” In the stillness, the PNS quieted my racing thoughts, my heart rested, and my spirit aligned with God’s presence. The combination of spiritual practice and physiological response revealed God’s design for holistic peace.

Reflection:
Restoration is both spiritual and physiological. Following God’s rhythms, prayer, meditation, worship, rest, gratitude, and fellowship, activates the PNS, reduces anxiety, and strengthens resilience. Peace is not passive; it is intentional, arising when we align with God’s design for mind, body, and spirit.

Action Steps:

  • Schedule 10–15 minutes of prayer or Scripture meditation today.
  • Perform one act of kindness, such as encouraging a friend or helping someone in need.
  • Practice mindful awareness during routine activities, noticing God’s presence.
