(These series explores the spiritual power that flows from God’s presence to heal, restore, and renew)

Key Text: Ezekiel 47:3–5
Have you ever stood at the edge of something vast and unknown, feeling both the thrill of possibility and the weight of uncertainty? Ezekiel’s vision in chapter 47 paints a powerful picture of a river flowing from the temple, beginning as a trickle and deepening with every step. The further he walks, the deeper the waters become, ankle-deep, then knee-deep, waist-deep, and finally, waters so deep they could only be crossed by swimming. This progression is more than just physical; it mirrors the spiritual journey of every believer. God doesn’t throw us into deep waters immediately. Instead, He invites us, step by step, into greater depths of trust, surrender, and dependence.
Ankle-Deep: The Beginning of Obedience
At ankle-deep, we’re still in control. Our feet are grounded. This is often the stage where we first encounter God’s presence, safe, shallow, and somewhat predictable. It’s the initial “yes” to follow Him, the beginning of obedience. But while the water touches us, it doesn’t carry us. We’re still walking in our own strength.
Knee-Deep: Strength Meets Surrender
Moving deeper, the water reaches the knees, symbolizing prayer, humility, and learning to yield. It’s a place where we begin to sense the flow of God’s Spirit more powerfully, yet we still resist letting go completely. Our natural instincts still dominate. God is patient, but He gently calls us forward.
Waist-Deep: The Turning Point
At waist-deep, we’re no longer entirely stable. The current tugs at us. Decisions made here are often life-altering. Faith is no longer theoretical, it’s tested. Surrender becomes more visible, and the Spirit’s flow begins to direct our steps more than our own will. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s where true transformation begins.
Waters Too Deep: Full Dependence
Finally, Ezekiel reaches waters so deep they could not be crossed on foot. There’s no more walking, only swimming. At this point, the river carries him. He must yield completely or be swept away. This is where spiritual maturity is found: in letting go of control, in fully trusting God’s Spirit to lead, carry, and sustain. It’s not passive; it’s profound trust.
In the late 1980s when God led my husband David and me to the Middle East, our faith was still learning to walk. Living in a foreign land stretched us beyond comfort, familiarity and certainty. There were moments when trust felt fragile, like standing ankle-deep in unfamiliar waters. Yet God sustained us daily, emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Even when answers were delayed, His presence was constant. The early years taught me that faith does not require full understanding; it only requires willingness to step forward. God never asked us to see the entire river, only to follow where He was leading, one obedient step at a time.
The Invitation
God’s Spirit is always flowing, always drawing us deeper. Not to drown us, but to free us from the limitations of our own strength. Each stage is an invitation, not a demand. But the further we go, the more of Him we experience. The deeper we step, the less we rely on ourselves, and the more we are carried by His grace.
🕊️ Reflection Thought:Deeper waters may feel risky, but they carry you where your own strength cannot. So, where are you standing today? Are your feet barely touching the edge, or have you dared to move into deeper places with God? Wherever you are, the river is flowing. Step in. Go deeper still. Let the Spirit carry you into places where only He can take you.
