A Life Dedicated to God’s Call 16/03 /1953 – 11/3/2026
His journey on earth has ended, but the seeds of faith he planted will continue to bear fruit for generations
Some lives quietly reflect the grace of God in such a way that their story becomes a testimony for generations. The life of John Mathew was one such life—a journey marked by faith, humility, and steadfast devotion to God’s calling
John Mathew was born in 1953 to devout Christian parents. His father, K. Mathew John, affectionately known as Kochumon, and his mother welcomed him with great joy into their farmhouse home. For seventeen years, John remained their only son until the birth of his younger brother.
Just twelve days after the newborn arrived, the family was struck by a severe outbreak of chickenpox. His grandparents and mother suffered greatly during that difficult time. In those days of isolation, very few came to help them. Only a humble worker from their farm faithfully brought food to the household. In that season of hardship, John’s parents made a solemn vow before God that their son would one day serve Him.
Growing up in a peaceful village environment, John learned the value of simplicity and hard work. His father managed the farm, raising cows and poultry, while his mother handled the dairy produce, selling milk, butter, and ghee in nearby shops. John often accompanied his father to the fields, grazing cattle in the green meadows. Though he was a bright and obedient student, active in school and Sunday School, he often felt a deeper longing within his heart.
At the age of twelve, while tending the cattle in the meadows, John experienced a profound encounter with the Lord. That moment quietly shaped the direction of his life. Later, during a Vacation Bible School, a visiting director who stayed at their home recognized his spiritual hunger and encouraged him to pursue studies at Bangarapet Bible College.
After completing his Pre-University studies, John stepped forward in faith. His grandfather offered to support his college fees, and his father lovingly prepared a trunk with his belongings and sent him off. Soon after, God provided unexpectedly when a relative arranged for his full educational expenses to be covered through family abroad. Through every stage, God faithfully sustained him.
John later pursued further studies at the Allahabad Agricultural Institute and became involved with the International Child Welfare program, combining practical service with ministry.
On February 13, 1981, John married Mercy, a woman who faithfully shared his vision and calling. Together they built a home rooted in faith and prayer, raising their two sons, Jocy John Mathew and Koshy John Mathew, in the nurture of the Lord.
John’s heart for ministry was especially evident in his work among children and families. Through Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools, and outreach efforts, he sowed seeds of faith in many young lives. At the same time, he used his agricultural training to help rural communities improve their livelihoods. His life demonstrated that true ministry reaches both the spiritual and practical needs of people.
Though his journey included trials, John remained steadfast in prayer and humble in spirit. He encouraged younger believers, supported fellow servants of God, and lived a life of quiet faithfulness.
Today we thank God for the life of John Mathew. From the simple village meadows of his childhood to a lifetime of service, his life reminds us that true greatness lies not in worldly success, but in faithful obedience to God’s call. His race is finished, but the seeds of faith he planted will continue to bear fruit for generations.
A life lived for God never fades; its legacy continues in every heart it touches.
