To sanctify is to literally “set apart for particular use in a special purpose or work and to make it holy or sacred.
”Sanctification is the act or process of acquiring sanctity, of being made or becoming holy.” It is a gift given through the power of God to a person .
Sanctification is accomplished by God, but it still requires the cooperation of men and women. We must fight against sin, express gratitude toward God, and offer ourselves fully to him. We also should imitate the example of Christ
How do you live a sanctified life?
Disconnect from sin: To live a sanctified life, you must disconnect from sin. Sin will never go on its own. If you don’t rise up against it, it won’t go. You can wait from now till eternity for sin to go; but until you rise up against it, it won’t.
God’s purpose for a Christian to live a separated life in purity of mind and body. This is practical sanctification. A holy life demonstrates God’s supernatural power at work in a believer’s life. A holy walk involves a right relationship with God.
Biblical examples to sanctification-
- The sanctification of Moses: In Exodus 3-4, God calls Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Through this process, Moses is sanctified and transformed from a hesitant, fearful man into a bold leader who trusts in God’s power.
- The sanctification of Paul: In Acts 9, Paul (then known as Saul) is transformed from a persecutor of Christians into a devoted follower of Christ. His encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus leads to a radical transformation and sanctification of his life
- Another example is King David, who committed adultery and murder but later repented and was described as a man after God’s own heart. Both of these examples show that it is never too late to turn to God, seek His forgiveness, and begin the process of sanctification.
Jesus tells us in John 17:16-19 that we have a practical progressive sanctification of our present life by the application of the truth of God’s Word. Jesus declares about his disciples that they are not of the world as he is also not of the world. Jesus’ genuine prayer at this point for the believers to the Father is to “Sanctify” them by the truth.
The amplified bible says, like this ‘Sanctify them (purify, consecrate, separate them for yourself make them holy) by your truth. The word “sanctify” in verse seventeen means “to consecrate, or to set apart persons or things to God.”
