Preparation for Quiet time

To find the time to meet with God, some find it easiest to wake up a little earlier in the morning, while others manage to squeeze it into their lunch hour or evenings.

Often, we encounter reasons that make it challenging to have a quiet time:

  • Lack of planning the night before.
  • Absence of a structured Bible reading plan.
  • Consistent opposition from distractions and the enemy.

If this struggle sounds familiar, it’s time to emphasize the importance of spending time with God and how it can profoundly impact your life. Here are some ways to prepare for this:

  1. Prioritize Sleep: Maintain a disciplined sleep schedule and avoid late nights or excessive caffeine intake. God will bless your commitment to this.
  2. Wake Up Refreshed: Ensure you are fully awake before reading or praying. You can wash your face and even enjoy a hot drink. A friend once told me, “A cup of tea or coffee helps me have an intelligent quiet time.”
  3. Combat Sleepiness: If you feel drowsy while praying, consider changing your position. Abraham “stood,” and Jesus often sought lonely places or mountainsides. You can also walk and pray out loud to enhance concentration.
  4. Active Listening: Remember, quiet time isn’t just about talking. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to “Be still and know that I am God.” Listen to His voice. Job 2:13 demonstrates the value of silent companionship, akin to Job’s friends sitting with him for seven days without uttering a word. We must relearn the art of listening.
  5. Seek the Holy Spirit: Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your quiet time. This divine guidance is a tremendous blessing.

When adequately prepared, you will witness the abundant fruit that emerges from your “time with God.”
